Yes, flip flops. My first summer as a CA I practically lived in flip flops. We were supposed to wear closed toe shoes while roving. I wore flip flops. And for some reason these flip flops caused my feet to grow some callouses on the inside bottom portion of my heel. It was nasty. And because it was my first summer in Utah my skin wasn't used to the dry weather and my heels started to crack. My feet were the most disgusting things that you would have ever seen.
In fact, they were the most disgusting thing that the sweet Vietnamese lady at the nail salon had ever seen. At the end of the summer Amanda and I went for pedicures. Amanda was done first so my feet got an extra long soak. Not long enough, however, as when the sweet woman pulled my foot out of the water and saw how dirty it still was, along with being very calloused and disgusting, she expressed the most horrified face that I have ever seen. I started apologizing profusely, while she visibly tried not to vomit and said that it was okay. My feet looked beautiful afterward. And even though now they're not bad like that at all, every time I go to that nail salon she avoids me. And I love her because of it.
I spent a good summer in these flip flops, getting all dirty and dusty. And I'll always remember that day at the nail salon. And getting foot cream from Boyd and Hayley for my birthday that year. And continually being made fun of for how utterly disgusting my feet really were. Literally, you have no idea.
But that summer was fun and carefree. And I really came into my own. I changed so much that summer and I learned so much about myself. I came to know that the gospel was true. I made friends that will last a lifetime and then some. It's hard to measure the difference between that summer and this just past one. The first summer I grew up, learned who I was, and learned to love BYU. This summer I changed. I became the better version of myself. Improvement and progression, my friends, improvement and progression.
