Seinfeld Friends

When I was in high school I had this best friend named Sam. One of the things that I loved about Sam was how comfortable she was in my house. She would come over and the second she was let into the door she would walk to the kitchen and open up the fridge/pantry and start eating whatever she wanted. To me that was what real friendship was.

Recently I've been talking with some friends about the show Seinfeld, and how they always just walked into their friend's apartments. We've joked about running away to Portland or moving to New York and having a girl's apartment and, well, Skyler's apartment. And how it would be like Seinfeld and we would have our own living spaces but spend the same amount of time in both apartments.

I'm happy to say that I feel like it's kind of already happened. MegN frequently knocks quickly on the door and then walks in, or if I'm expecting her bypasses the knocking completely. Rochelle does this, as does MegP. Skyler doesn't, probably because he's afraid of walking in on us naked or having a vision. I love that Boyd will wash any and all dinner dishes without asking as Hayley and I sit in the living room chatting. I love that MegN walks into the kitchen and grabs a very familiar bulk size cashew jar and snacks on handfuls at a time. And lastly, I love that sweet Skyler comes by while I'm helping Marie with her cooking class make-ups and instead of leaving or fooling around on the internet feels comfortable enough to hang our jackets up in the closet, sweep the floor around us, vacuum the living room and hang up snowflakes from the ceiling, all without saying a single word to us about it.

I think what I love most about this kind of thing is that it feels like family. And it doesn't feel like my family, but the family that I've always dreamed of having. I'm so very grateful for my friends that feel like family and that are comfortable enough to act like it.

P.S. Today I got an email from Sam. We're trying to see if it's possible for us to see each other as she'll be in Vegas before Christmas and I'll be here in Provo. Her email started like this:

hello dearest jess,
first i must tell you that i bought my first curling iron last week, and each time i use it august says "you have curly hair like jessjess! boing! mama can i boing it?"

It warmed my heart.

So. In order to be friends I have to come clean your apartment.

I'll have to think about that.

:)

I ring the doorbell because the last time I just walked in, Marie yelled at me (despite the fact that you were expecting me). Ha ha! Oh, bless her.
