Science is Cool!

Sometimes I learn things in my science classes that literally BLOW.MY.MIND.  Like recently I learned that pretty much the reason we're able to move is because of the movement of sodium and potassium into and out of our cells.  Isn't that crazy?  Their movement stimulates an electrical signal down your neural cells that causes your body to move.  It's so weird.

One time I learned in molecular biology that scientists are coming up with ways to kill cancer that doesn't really rely on using things to KILL cancer.  Like instead of a bullet to a cancer cell, scientists want to be able to cut of cancer's food supply so that they can't continue to live and grow.  The great thing about that approach is that that would mean that cancer doesn't become resistant to medication.

Which is a big deal.  Because what I learned in microbiology is that diseases are becoming increasingly resistant to drugs.  They are mutating faster than scientists can come up with drugs to kill them.  Which is terrible.  Because if we can't kill them then they can kill us.  Big deal, people.

UC Merced is working on this cool research that would reverse evolve diseases.  That means that as they become increasingly resistant to one type of drug, maybe we can go back to an old drug that they've outgrown.  WHICH IS SO COOL!  Because saving lives is cool.

Even cooler, if you donate a certain amount of money to their project you can get a way cool T-shirt.  Or some way cool trading cards.  Which have my name written all over them.  I kind of want to donate twice so that I can get both the T-shirt and the trading cards.  But also, because this science is way cool.
