Every month we have a fire drill at work. So, in case there's a fire the boys know to LEAVE THE HOUSE and meet in the driveway.
Yesterday when the boys got home from school I told them that we would be having a fire drill that day. T was all kinds of excited and worried. "How are we going to have the alarm? There isn't a handle to pull (like at school)." I explained we'd push the test button on the fire alarm. "Won't it hurt Zoey's (Greg's dog) ears?" "That's a good point. Maybe Greg will take her outside before it goes off." "Can I push the button?" "No. You're going to be in your room pretending to play wii."
When the time was getting closer to the actual drill, T went up to his room. He returned back downstairs happily exclaiming that he was ready! I looked over at him and saw that he had put on one of his favorite shirts for the occasion--a button up shirt with flames on it. I tried to cover up my laughter. Greg didn't think it was nearly as funny as I did, but he also didn't think this was nearly as funny as I did.
T went back upstairs. A minute later he came back down wearing not only his flame shirt, but a hard hat. Greg and I looked at him and both said, "in case it turns into an earthquake."
I sent him back upstairs to pretend to play his Wii, because that would be a more real life situation than any. Greg set off the alarm and T dashed downstairs and outside like a joyful deer frolicking in a meadow. Best moment of his life.
I can only hope that in the case of a real emergency he doesn't stop to put on his flame shirt. Maybe the hard hat. But not the flame shirt.
Welcome, Minnie!!
